Louise Marler’s world communicates a deep tension between old and young; dirty and clean; rough and delicate. She distills an untapped beauty in the otherwise mundane—her viewers snap to the familiar and reexamine memory. Her prints are rich and colorful, often feeling like vintage Americana. She blends hand-crafts with technology. There is a playfulness and elasticity in the way Louise works.

At the L. A. Marler studio, you can visit a life journey of sifting excitedly through images, papers, fabrics, unlikely substrates, assorted collections of cherished elements, some broken, torn and rusty… Her sharp eye has always instinctually been drawn to discover the exquisite within the ordinary. “There are always great treasures to discover in everyday objects,” says Louise.

Marler’s advanced printmaking and photography evoke a deep visceral response. There is a meeting point of classical beauty and social commentary in her work. Her observations of our imperfect world are revealed with an unflinching honesty, style – purposeful simplicity and grace. This work urges us to remember a time when life was simpler.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Louise was always intrigued by the mechanics of things. Her father fixed old typewriters and her mother was a seamstress and teacher. Louise soaked up the desire to understand, dismantle, construct and redesign objects, destined for an artistic and innovative path.

Marler designs t-shirts and greeting cards fusing her skills as a graphic designer and photographer. She uses her own inventive techniques and cleaner methods, to print ecologically.

There is great value in engaging with the world as it is and capturing its natural beauty. With her Auto series Louise does just this, photographing cars in a soft and intimate manner enabling us to see these familiar steel objects in a new and stirring light.

Influenced by Warhol, Louise sees her work as being that of a cultural throwback, exploring the excess and beauty of human beings and their manufactured deconstruction. Traces of Henri Matisse’s cut-outs linger in the warm and earthy colors and balancing of complex detail in her compositions.

After 15 years of experience and continuing education in an array of specialties from etching, silk-screening, block carving and lithography, to graphic design and emulsion transfers; Louise is able to work on her commission printing projects, photographs, installations, apparel and greeting cards with an unfettered and inscrutable artistic sensibility.

L. A. Marler emerged from being not only her actual name and place of choice, but as the artist who is symbolic of the times and scene in which she lives. She embodies the contemporary, casual lifestyle, fashion, adventure, international blending, health, music, spirituality as well as nature, that are all part of what makes Los Angeles great.

Marler has sold her art, clothing and greeting cards internationally including hundreds of the finest boutiques in the USA. Her fine art photography has been exhibited in many galleries and seen in films, TV and commercials, including Two and a Half Men, Criminal Minds, ER, CSI Miami, Six Feet Under, Bernie Mac, Reba, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and others.
